But first let’s tackle the jargon so we understand what’s going on.
What is buffering?
In technology terms, a buffer is a cache of memory used to hold data temporarily while it is being moved from one place to another on a computer such as a printer spooler. When you’re streaming video, buffering simply means the video is downloading into a temporary folder on your hard drive for playback.
How does Wi-Fi work?
A wireless network uses radio waves, just like mobile phones, televisions and radios. The wireless adapter on a computer basically translates data into a radio signal and then a wireless router receives the signal and decodes it. This also works in reverse with the router receiving information from the Internet, translating it into a radio signal and sending it to the computer's wireless adapter.
So now you know the basics, here are our six tips:
Place the router as close to the physical centre of your home or office as possible. Positioning the router in the basement, or in a corner creates dead spots.
Check if your router has an external antenna. If so, it will need to be pointed in the right direction. Read the manufacturer’s instructions because correct positioning depends on the model and its configuration.
Make sure you update the router with performance improvements and security upgrades. The update option is found in the router’s administration software – consult the manual if you need to.
Set up your router to prioritise streaming to your TV. Newer routers, using Quality of Service settings, are able to select specific devices to receive priority Wi-Fi access.
Use a range extender if you have lots of dead spots because it can help provide better coverage. Make sure the capabilities of the extender match the capabilities of the router. If it’s a large property, you may need a managed solution with access points.
Restart your router/modem once a month to keep everything running smoothly:
- Unplug your router/modem from the power switch
- Wait 30 seconds and then plug it back in
- Power your devices back on after a few minutes
Don’t forget that wireless networks should have 99.999% availability.
